OpenAI's Quest for Transparent AI Governance
OpenAI is taking steps to ensure that democratic processes shape the governance of its AI software. The newly formed "Collective Alignment" team aims to address bias and enhance transparency in decision-making. This initiative follows a grant program dedicated to funding experiments in democratic processes. The team, led by research engineer Tyna Eloundou and product manager Teddy Lee, may explore collaborations with projects like Worldcoin to distinguish between human and AI interactions. OpenAI acknowledges the importance of public input to guide the development of AI models and is actively hiring for its expanding team, reinforcing its commitment to responsible AI development.
Tokyo's $30M Bet on Transformative AI Models
Sakana AI, a Tokyo-based startup founded by ex-Google researchers David Ha and Llion Jones, has secured $30 million in seed funding led by Lux Capital and Khosla Ventures. While the company is yet to launch products, it aspires to make fundamental improvements to AI systems by having numerous smaller models collaborate, deviating from the giant monolithic model approach. Sakana AI also aims to tailor AI models for the Asian market, recognizing the unique characteristics of character-based languages. Lux Capital envisions positioning Tokyo as an AI hub similar to San Francisco and London. The funding highlights the growing interest in ventures exploring innovative approaches to AI development.
Money Transmitter Nod in Utah for X
X Corp, led by Elon Musk, has achieved money transmitter approval in Utah, marking its fifteenth state license for facilitating funds transfers. This approval aligns with X's goal of launching peer-to-peer payments within the app, a key step toward its broader vision of integrating full payments and banking services by the end of 2024. While securing approvals from all U.S. states remains a challenge, Musk's ambitious vision aims to establish a comprehensive platform, originally envisioned as x.com in 1999, capable of handling various financial transactions. Despite potential hurdles and regulatory complexities, X is pushing forward with its optimistic yet ambitious plans, reminiscent of Musk's previous success with PayPal. The success of this endeavor will determine if X can effectively navigate the regulatory landscape and achieve meaningful adoption in the competitive payments market, similar to challenges faced by Meta in its efforts with Meta Pay.
